Imphal, July 04 2014 :
DESAM in a press conference held at their office premises, expressed their grief on the unfortunate accident of Leishangthem Kaleimakhong, Thoubal district that killed 23 individuals including the driver and a student.
DESAM blamed the State Government saying that the major cause of the accident was Government's negligence towards adopting the Manipur Transport Policy and the implementation of uniform colour code for school buses and vans.
Moirangthem Angouba, President, DESAM added that the association had been urging the Government to implement safety school transport system since 2005 without a positive result.
Remembering the Tinsid road incident where students were found unconscious inside a school van, the organisation elaborated the need for safety school transport system.
In 1999, the Supreme Court ordered the uniformity of school buses throughout the country, limiting the number of passengers and introducing fire alarm in all school buses.
However, the President added, the State Government has put non of these directives into action.
Education Minister N Oken have also announced the uniformising of school buses in a speech earlier without any effect as such.
Tracing all such faults in the working of the State Government, DESAM puts the blame of the accident to the Government urging them to take up the necessary steps to rule out such unfortunate events in the near future.
