Imphal, January 18 2019:
Apex student bodies namely AMSU, DESAM, KSA, SUK, AIMS and MSF, launched a poster campaign against the Citizen Amendment Bill at Khwairamband Keithel and other important traffic junctions of the State today.
The poster campaign against the CAB began at Wahengbam Leikai parking area where volunteers of the student bodies circulated posters to the passers-by and also put up the posters on auto rickshaws, Wingers and other light passenger vehicles in the area.
The volunteers further stuck the posters opposing the CAB 2016 at different parts of Khwairamband Keithel area and on the pillars of the flyover bridge.
The poster contained slogans like 'We strongly oppose Citizen Amendment Bill-2016', 'Save North East, to Save tomorrow's Manipur', 'Seal Indo-Bangladesh Border', 'North East is not a dumping ground of illegal migrants', 'Down Down Central Government', 'Go back National political parties' and 'Go back RSS' etc.
Speaking to media persons, one of the student leaders said that the poster campaign has been launched against the passing of the CAB in the Lok Sabha despite protest and strong opposition by the people of the entire NE region.
The act of passing the Bill clearly shows the Centre's negligent and step motherly treatment towards the NE people.
He continued that the poster campaign is part of a series of agitation by the student bodies which was launched since the last few days against the Bill.
The student leader also stated that the stage has been set for holding a public discourse/people's convention in connection with the present issue at Manipur University Centenary hall on January 2 0, to deliberate on how much the Bill will affect the entire NE States and Manipur in particular.
He then appealed to all section of the people to participate in said public discourse to take up a collective decision against the Bill.
If the Bill gets passed in the Rajya Sabha, then the student bodies will take up a struggle for separate political autonomy of the NE region, he cautioned.
The student leader also said that the apex student bodies are in touch with various other student bodies of the NE region regarding the issue.
He then explained that the talk with the State Government last night was not fruitful and it was totally against the hope of the apex student bodies.
He clarified that no agreement was reached during the talk with the State Government as the student bodies made their stand very clear against the Bill and demanded it to be withdrawn immediately.
