State JDU against legalisation of liquor

Janata Dal (United) Manipur State Unit has decried the 'proposed' move of the State Government to legalise liquor.
The party supports the cause of the Coalition Against Drug & Alcohol (CADA) and All Manipur Women Social Reformation and Development Samaj against legalising liquor in the State, said Maisnam Dolendro, JDU Manipur State Unit chief general secretary today.
Speaking at the party's office in New Checkon, he urged the State Government to strictly implement the Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act 1991 .
Stating that the party is against any amendment in the Act to legalise liquor, he said even as the Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act 1991 is enforced there is rampant production and brewing of liquor in many places.
It is disturbing that the Government is planning to legalise and export State liquor when many organisations and people have been deliberating and fighting for an end to liquor menace, he said.
Liquor not only damages health but also pulls apart families, he said.
Alcohol is also a factor for many of the crimes today, he said.
He asserted that legalisation of liquor in the State will have adverse impact on the State granary.
Liquor if legalised will not bring income but famine- rice shortage, he said.
He termed the move of the State Government as 'an invitation for a third Nupi Lal'.
Meanwhile, the party wished Kabui community on the occasion of Gaan-Ngai.
