Imphal, April 17 2011:
The United Naga Council (UNC), the apex Naga civil body, which had asked the people who are demanding creation of Phungyar as a new revenue district to withdraw the move, has rued the ambush laid on MLA Phungyar A/C Wungnaoshang Keishing and his convoy party at Riha village saying it is 'pained and saddened' on the unexpected incident.
Incidentally the people of Phungyar sub division have raised the demand for better administration in all fronts in the area and the demand for a revenue district is spearheaded by MLA Wungnaoshang who represents them.
It may be recalled that Keishing along with five Naga MLAs had in May last year resigned from their legislature posts to denounce the Government of Manipur for preventing NSCN (IM) general secretary Thuingaleng Muivah from visiting his ancestral village in Ukhrul but Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker is yet to accept their resignation.
The council in a statement issued today said "at this moment of grief and sorrow, we pray God to give courage and solace to the bereaved families.
May the departed souls rest in peace and also wish the injured brothers a speedy recovery" .
The UNC however condemned the Government for what it termed as 'mishandling various issues," .
