Abstract
In Medicine, as in many fields, computers have been applied widely to automate processes that
deal with information and data. The field of medical informatics is concerned with the exploration of
the basic principles that underlie such application .Because the practice of medicine is fundamentally
an information processing activity, some principles from medical informatics are relevant to the
practicing physicians. In this article, I want to underlie topics in medical informatics selected for
relevance to practicing clinicians.
Introduction
Information poverty is a key problem facing health-care professionals in the state like Manipur.
Medical informatics has particular promise for solving remote geographical barriers. Our practicing
Physicians must get benefits from the expertise of their colleages and their development available else
where.
While the live link communications to other pioneer hospitals may be expensive, there are
many other ways that are more affordable. Libraries on CD-ROMS provide developing areas with the
latest medical updates without the cost or delay of shipping tons of paper. Physicians in many parts of
the least develop countries can now search MEDLINE, ask medical questions that are answered by
leading health centres in the world, and consult by e-mail with fellow physicians world wide. This is
achieved through an earth station that communicates with low flying satellite own by satellife - a non
profit organization that uses communications technology to aid physicians in developing nations. For
an investment of less than Rs.5-6 lacs, it is possible for state to acquire the necessary hardware and
software for the project and train its staff. Using local communication wares, the same central station
could be connected with the Deptt. of health and district hospitals or health centres to serve the whole
state.
In this article, I hope to provide physicians and administrators in the state with some insight
into what medical informatics has to offer for establishing up-to-date, yet often affordable health systems
that can significantly enhance the way medicine is practiced in the state.
