Shri Yumnam Shamu Singh was born on February 8, 1947 at Wangjing Tekcham Leikai, Wangjing.
He was born to Yumnam Gopal Singh and Yumnam ongbi Keina Devi.
Yumnam Shamu started his formal education under his teacher Elangbam Mangi Singh who lived in the same locality and learned Nat sankritan and Cholom under the guidance of noted teachers like
o Huiningshumbam Nabadwip,
o Yaikhom Mani Singh,
o Gurumayum Iboton Sharma,
o Nongmaithem Chaobi Singh,
o Toijam Nityai Singh and
o Takhelchangbam Nganba Sharma in later years.
He is currently teaching Nat Sankritan at Nat Sankritan Academy and Research Centre, Yaishkul Janmasthan, Imphal.
He is also contributing as 'Eshei Hanba' in Shri Shri Govindaji Pala Loishang.
He had attended many programmes of Nat Sankritan songs held at various places of the country including Brindavan and Nabadwip.
Yumnam Shamu Singh has been conferred with 'Abhinandan Patra' at International Sankritan Day Celebration, 2016.
In recognition of his contribution in the field of Nat sankritan music, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Imphal awarded him with Natbhusan (Duhar) in its 83rd Annual Meeting.
