World Bamboo Day celebrated
Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD) celebrated World Bamboo Day at Imphal in collaboration with Manipur State Bamboo Mission, South Asea Bamboo Foundation and North East Center for Technology Application and Reach.
The programme was addressed by Chief Guest, Dr. R. K. Ranjan Singh, Hon’ble Union Minister of State, Ministry of External Affairs and Education, Govt. of India. He emphasized to explore bamboo diversity and scientific interventions for developing products/ processes and improving the socio-economic status of the region.
During the programme, Prof. Pulok K. Mukherjee, Director, IBSD highlighted about research initiatives of IBSD for the development of bioresources and boosting the bioeconomy of the region. He mentioned about the research work being performed using bamboo bioresources of this region.
Sh. Kamesh Salam, CEO, South Asea Bamboo Foundation highlighted the inception of World Bamboo Day. He mentioned the initiatives of bamboo promoters all over the globe by organizing various activities to mark this day. Further, he suggested that this event should be recognised by United Nations since bamboo can achieve most of the Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDG).
During the programme, Shri Swaran Singh Chhabra, Principal Secretary and Mission Director, Manipur State Bamboo Mission highlighted various initiatives of the mission to promote bamboo in the state. The programme was joined online by many speakers from different countries including Mr-Ming (Jack) Huang, National Chung Cheng University, Taiwan, Mr. Mark Sultan Bambuhay, Philippines, Ms. Bernice Dapaah, Ghana and Mr. Marco Piazza from Bangkok and shared their initiatives to celebrate this day.
During the event, many exterts including Dr. Arun Kumar Sarma, Dr. Lokesh Chandra Dubey, Sh. C. S. Susanth, Dr. Selim Reza and Dr. Mr. Sapol shared their ideas for promoting bamboo bioresources to large extent.
The programme was attended by scientists, researchers, staffs of IBSD and SABF including local entrepreneurs from Manipur. During the programme, bamboo saplings were distributed to farmers and many bamboo products were displayed.
