Day-4
10th October 2013
Bulletin
Prof. Nerkar began the day with the statement that Lighting is a creative Art and not a technique only; the art of photography is influenced by the art of painting in terms of Visual Composition & Light Effect. This was the essence of his lecture titled Art of Lighting in Cinema/Television. He further elaborated on the following points :
i) 4 basic purposes of Lighting:
o For providing sufficient light intensity a certain amount of light is needed to record the image.
o To give a 3D perspective to the scene
o To create and enhance the mood of the scene
o To attract the viewers’ attention towards a particular object or character
ii) 4 important factors in Lighting:
o The direction of light – affects the shadow pattern
o The placement of light – affects the dramatic effect
o The quality of light – affects the colour quality, harshness and softness of light
o The intensity of light – affects the exposure setting
Colour temperature Concept in Videography – generally measured in Kelvin (K); a normal day light is 5600 K (blue/cool) and for tungsten light is 3200 K (orange/warm colour)
White Balance Concept in Videography – white light consists of a mix of Red, Green and Blue (three primary colours). This is the process in which these three primary colours are adjusted so that the white colour is reproduced as white and once this is done the camera will be able to produce the scene in its natural form.
iii) 3 Lighting Formula:
Key Light, Fill light and Back light are the major sources of light used to light up a particular scene/ area or an object. After the lecture the expert showed a music video “Na Tum Hume Jano” which was made by his students of FTII.
In the afternoon session Mr. Nerkar demonstrated the three lighting system to the participants.
