Why Should Not I Cry ?
Jodha Chandra Sanasam *
Why should not I cry?
I am your father, your birthfather,
why should not your mother cry too?
She is your mother, your birthmother.
It is long since I cried last
your mother too, I consoled her not to cry,
I said, 'Our son, he has become
a paladin of the land
you and I should be proud of him.'
Yet she could not buy my word
she continued to cry
despite my saying so.
The day came,
as the date of the anniversary arrived,
your mother had begun to cry
since early morning
just like that.
Among those in the row
when we offered flowers
one after another
I came to your photo there
encircled by flowers;
that moment my heart felt a sense
as if you were standing there
somewhere near looking at us.
I glanced behind and sideways instinctive
then I saw you standing yonder there
on that small grassy mound
at the corner in the western direction
gazing towards us.
I could not hold it any longer
I felt my heart lugged and carried away
somewhere unknown
and my tears just rolled down
spontaneous on its own.
Seeing my mien
your mother cried and wailed aloud.
My vow broke
our vows broke;
my solemn oath to keep your dignity!
But today I am saying
why should not I cry?
I am your father, your birthfather,
why should not your mother cry too?
She is your mother, your birthmother.
