Vindicated, Delhi mulls visit to Myanmar

Sources in New Delhi said a visit by Manmohan Singh, perhaps as early as next month, was “under consideration”. Among the details yet to be finalised are whether it would be a bilateral visit or whether Singh would travel to Myanmar for a likely meeting of regional grouping Bimstec in June.
No Indian Prime Minister has visited the southeastern neighbour since Rajiv Gandhi’s 1987 trip.
The past few months, South Block has been patting itself on the back. India has for nearly a decade advocated a policy of engagement with the junta but faced western accusations of ignoring the military’s excesses in the name of pragmatism. A visiting Obama had reminded India of its responsibilities as a democracy during his speech to Parliament in November 2010.
So, while India hosted Than Shwe and Myanmar President Thein Sein in the past two years, it didn’t want a situation where Singh visited Myanmar but failed to meet Suu Kyi, who was released from house arrest last year.
