Utilise service of India Post at own risk
30 November, 2013:
Recently, I parcelled invitation cards, weighing almost 90 kg, packed in 5 separate boxes, from Lucknow to Imphal. They reached safely, even delivered to our doorstep, much to the surprise as they were sent through IndiaPost, which hardly ever delivers such bulky items to the address (right to the doorstep) destined for.
Inspired by such good a service, my faith doubled in the postal system and I again packed a box, this time a carton full of clothes, mostly which were meant for my sister’s marriage. I came from Shimla to attend my sister’s marriage, and some days later, we received a letter from Head Post Office, Imphal to collect the parcel by ourselves this time.
A bit skeptical initially, when we went to fetch, we found that the box had been cut open and all the new clothes, packed in plastic bags, were missing and only some old clothes were lying inside. Immediately, we went to talk to the Manager (Speed Post), who appeared calm enough to explain to us that such incidents usually occur at IndiaPost on daily basis, moreover, began giving free lecture to us how the postal system functions.
Though thanks to him for enlightening us with the theory, whatever he told us did not solve an inch of our problem, to recover the lost items. While we asked what we can do, whether we can lodge a case or report to some authority to redress our grievance, the Manager kept saying whatever we do, nothing will happen to recover the lost goods.
Well true enough though, at least we expected that he will side with us and, more optimistically, that he would do something to solve such kind of problem forever, or at least to an extent in future, but the mentality that such a problem will keep persisting in such a system discouraged a citizen like me.
Now, as I decided to take up the matter to Consumer Forum and to see if something can be done, and knowing the fact that nothing much can be done to retrieve my lost goods, which were worth more than 20K, I am hopeful that steps can be taken to minimise such incidents in future, and also that the readers of this letter are well informed of the fact to get their goods insured and take other prerequisite steps prior sending their parcels through IndiaPost. As for me, I will be sending subsequent items through private courier service only from now on.
