US team to scour N-E for American bodies
- Joint effort to locate World War II remains
The Telegraph | Nishit Dholabhai | New Delhi, June 19:
Once the rains end in October, a US government team will descend on the Northeast to hunt for American bodies lying in the mountains or frozen in the glaciers for nearly 70 years, with help from the Indian defence forces. During World War II, some 400 US air force transport planes are believed to have crashed in the region’s mountains while ferrying supplies between Calcutta and Kunming (China), or between Agartala and Burma.
Most of the crashes occurred over the “Hump” — the name the pilots gave to the Eastern Himalayas in Arunachal Pradesh — but a few took place in Tripura, Nagaland and Assam too.
During a political and military dialogue here in April, the US had requested India’s help in tracing the wreckages and the remains of the crew. New Delhi agreed to this last week during the India-US Strategic Dialogue in Washington, a US media release says.
