UGC plans Ombudsman to check discrimination
Seven Sisters Post | Gautam Debroy | New Delhi (May 2):
Shocked at the recent death of Dana Silva Sangma in Gurgaon, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to set up an Ombudsman in every higher educational institution even as Union home minister P Chidamabaram has reportedly said that a CBI investigation will be conducted if the Haryana government fails to make any progress.
According to sources, the Ombudsman will have the power to hear complaints of discrimination in educational institutions. It will investigate complaints and mediates for fair settlements. The development came close on the heels of Human Resource Development (HRD) minister Kapil Sibal requesting the UGC to formulate regulations to prevent discrimination in higher educational institutions.
“The UGC, in a recent meeting deliberated on these regulations, has finalised to establish an Ombudsman in every educational institution,” a government official said. According to sources, Sibal has expressed his concern over the recent incidents of alleged discrimination and profiling of students from the Northeastern region pursuing studies in educational institutions.
