CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CSIR-CFTRI), Mysore is one of the premier research institute in the country contributing immensely to the agriculture-economy more than last six decades. The Institute has developed over 400 agro-processing technologies and many have been successfully transferred to industries as well.
The “Oinam Awang Leikai Women’s Development Association” (OINAM), Bishnupur District is an SHG registered in 2008 with more than 100 members. The current activity of the SHG is to procure raw fruits and vegetables, cereals, meat, fish etc. and then processing into value added products in a tiny scale by adopting locally available technologies with the available infrastructure.
The major tiny scale processed products are bamboo pickles, juices from pineapple, orange, passion fruits and lemon, fermented fish, fermented soybean, chili powder etc. The production capacity is too small due to lack of suitable equipment and machineries. Under the CSIR-800 activity for societal outreach, CFTRI has purchased high-value machineries purchased and it has been installed for expanding the scale and diverse range of products.
As per the scope of the MoU, the existing Food Processing Facility of OINAM, CSIR-CFTRI will be providing infrastructural support and expertise in the area of food processing for the betterment of society and all round growth in the region with the support Department of Commerce & Industries, Govt. of Manipur for a period of 3 years.

The parent organisation of CFTRI, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) recently launched “Science & Technology Intervention for North Eastern Region (STINER)” in which, CSIR-CFTRI also will be contributing with some of the potential technologies in the area of fruits & vegetables, bakery products, spices, grains and meat products for contributing to North East economy.
CSIR-CFTRI has worked closely with many North Eastern states and recently the technologies for Fruit Syrups & Squashes, Fruit Jams & Jellies and Ginger beverage etc. have been transferred to Govt. Fruit Preservation Factory, Sikkim.
Also the Institute has been involved in many of the programme undertaken by NERMAC under DoNER based in Shillong. Earlier, CSIR-CFTRI was instrumental in establishing a modern Pineapple processing unit in collaboration with the Rishang Keishang Foundation for Management of Tribal Areas, Imphal and DSIR, Govt. of India.
Responding on this new initiative, Shri Jitendra Jadhav, Director, CSIR-CFTRI expressed happiness of the fact that this initiative could effectively contribute towards the sustainable development and livelihood of the people in this region.
Also the model is one of the unique intervention as all the stakeholders are on the board and the Institute will be committed to realise the objectives under the agreement.
