"A museum is a non-profit, permanent institution in the service of society and its development, open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity and its environment for the purposes of education, study and enjoyment." - as defined by the International Council of Museums.Our state is having many museums which are delivering the same information as defined by the International Council of Museums. Some of the interesting museums you must visit are listed below:-
Souvenir – Manipur State Museum (2019)
MANIPUR STATE MUSEUM
Manipur State Museum was opened to the public on 23rd September 1969 by the then Prime Minister of India Late Smt. Indira Gandhi. It is one of the rarest museums in the state. The entire museum is divided into 8 (Eight) galleries in style and technique namely
(i) Ethnological Gallery,
(ii) Archaeological Gallery,
(iii) Jalan's Gallery,
(iv) Art Gallery,
(v) Natural History Gallery,
(vi) Children Gallery,
(vii) Musical Instrument Gallery and
(viii) Hiyang Hiren (Royal Boat) Shed.
Some of the interesting masterpieces collections of the museum include M.K. Binodini's Collection, Treasures found from Cheiraoching, Treasures from Kangla and Findings of Sekta from Pungdombam. The museum open from 10:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m. and ticket issued till 04:15 p.m. on all working days except MONDAY.
Kangla Museum
KANGLA MUSEUM
Kangla Museum inside the Kangla Fort is a very interesting museum in the heart of Imphal city inaugurated on 20th November 2009 in the building called "Victorian Building" constructed during the period of British in 1901. The museum houses many rare collections and divided into two galleries.
Some of the valuable collections include Genealogy of Kings of Ningthouja Lineage, Sculpture of Thon Taret Tholanmei, Portraits of Manipuri Kings and Freedom Fighters, Antique Photographs of Kangla, Portraits of British Officers, Findings of excavation of Kangla Fort, Maps of Manipur and its neighbours of different time-periods, Spears and Knives, Coins of different time periods, Pots and pot shreds. The museum closed on MONDAY and open on other working days from 09:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m.
Imphal Peace Museum
IMPHAL PEACE MUSEUM
The Imphal Peace Museum was founded in the year 2019 on the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Imphal from March to July 1944. The museum is located at the foothills of the Maibam Lokpa Ching (Red Hills) in Manipur.
The entire museum is having well stocked 3 (three sections) namely First section about the timeline of the Battle of Imphal, Second section displays about the Scenario after the World War II in the state and Third section showcases about the colourful Art & Culture of Manipur.
One of the most attractive of the museum is its audiovisual features. Because of its significances for all aspects the museum owned many National and International awards. The museum closed on MONDAY and open on rest working days from 10:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m.
