Tobacco use, cancer risk high in NE: Report

The annual report of the department of health and family welfare for 2013-14 strikes a resemblance with the study on Assessment of Pattern and Profile of Substance Use among Children in India, which was conducted for the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), wherein the incidences of substance abuse, including tobacco, in most of the states of the Northeast have been found to be alarming.
According to the study, a large percentage of children from Meghalaya reported use of tobacco (96.4 per cent) followed by Nagaland (95.8 per cent), and Sikkim (93.1 per cent). It was lowest in Goa (36.7 per cent).
