Theatre Workshop and Book Review at Moirang College
A book of drama based on the supreme sacrifice of a Musalman Royal Photographer ‘Dasu Sardar’ authored by the Principal of Moirang College Dr Raheijuddin Sheikh (Shamu) is released and reviewed in the one-day ‘Theatre Workshop cum Book Review’ held at the Seminar Hall of Moirang College, Moirang Manipur.
The programme was organized jointly by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and Students Theatre Circle which was created as a part of the College Students Mentoring Initiatives (COSMI) launched recently on the 27th October 2023 by the Directorate of University & Higher Education, Government of Manipur. The Workshop was organized with an objective to motivate and provide a platform to students who intend to choose theatre as their hobbies or professions other than the degrees or diplomas in the general mainstream education as envisaged under the NEP 2020.
Dasu Sardar is a book on the life of a Muslim Photographer who came to Manipur from UP and served at different capacities in the royal court of Manipuri kings during 1880’s. He was later married to a Meitei-Pangal girl from Thoubal Moijing and became a Meitei- Pangal officer in the royal court of the Manipuri kings. He was appointed Dewan (Account Officer) in the court of Maharaj Surchandra and allowed to stay at a gifted land called Mana Ingkhol near Minuthong Hatta.
Dasu Sardar took a key role in protecting the life of Yuvraj Bir Tikendrajit Singh during the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891. He was slaughtered on the 24th March 1891 on the charge of acting as a secret informer of Yuvraj Bir Tikendrajit Singh. His two daughters were also set to fire and killed; his wife escaped wounded amidst the gunshots.
The workshop cum book review was attended by the eminent theatre personality and cultural activist Loitongbam Brajamuhon Singh of Rupamahal Theatre as the Resource Person, Former faculty and Alumni Member of the College Y Modhu Singh as the Chief Guest, Nodal Officer Administration of the College N Joy Singh as the Guest of Honour, the Coordinator of IQAC Dr Ph Raju Singh presided over the sessions and Head of the Manipuri Department of the College Dr Moirangthem Rajesh Singh as the Book Reviewer.
