The Indian Soccer League (ISL) may have revived enthusiasm for the game but long before the big money and the big players came in, football enthusiasts in the Northeast kept the beautiful game going — with just about no finances, and hardly any support.
Manipur is a football powerhouse. The India’s women football team at Incheon Asian Games had 12 players from the state. The men’s football team had four players. “The locals donate money, rice, edible oil to keep the team going. We have to organise lotteries and games to fund our team, as there is no government fund for football teams. Other clubs also face similar problems,” he said. Every leikai (colony) has a football club. “The teams are owned by clubs, as companies are unwilling to finance football,” Aribam Gautam said.
