The love song of autumn
K. Radhakumar *
The green leaves dance around flowers
Of different colours and fully open
And the bees buzz among the blooms.
There is a feeling of spring
In the bosom of the tree of life.
That's the wonder of it -
Every day is a new day.
The autumn of life sleeps
At the foot of the tree of life
Among yellow leaves and brown twigs.
A tearful sight!
Reason tries to soothe emotion;
Plants come into leaf in spring,
The leaves turn yellow and fall in autumn.
Yes, it is natural order.
What of it?
There is no understanding god.
There is no place and time for one
No place and time for one.
Times have changed
Since God was alive.
A prince saw sorrows and death
And made him think about human suffering;
He sought an answer to it
And Buddhism came into being.
No, I am not Gautama Buddha
Who knows no desire and therefore does not suffer.
Not a brave soul
And enslaved by desires,
I long for a way out
Not through crucifixion of desires -
This is against nature
Thus spake the soothsayer.
I have taken this road
And have been going along it for a long time.
Never have I worried
The sun will set one day
For life is a one-day affair
And like water it passes through the palm of my hand.
If you thank me
For taking this painful journey
I will say 'my pleasure'
For it beggars description
And is beyond the reach of words.
