The Winter of Life
Dr Ranbir Laishram *
In the journey of life,
Between birth and death,
While surfing through the tides,
The winter of life is finally here.
Half of me still mystified,
I wondered,
How the years have passed ?
How I am here right now ?
My youthful college days,
Seems to be only yesterday.
With hope and ambition,
I toiled to be the person I am today.
Going through my memory lane,
Where I dwelt the most,
I both rejoiced and regretted.
Joy, for the things I have achieved,
Remorse for the things that I could not,
And the things I should have done.
Years after,
I met my old friend on the way.
Reminding each other
Of our good old days,
We laughed and enjoyed.
When we parted,
l was still struggling
To remember his name.
His hairs were grey,
Face mapped with wrinkles.
The reality of my reflection.
Through the years,
I thought the winter of life
Was far away from me.
But, here it is!
I never thought it would come so soon.
To my younger folks,
Sometimes I feel I should tell,
While your spirit is still high,
Never let it down,
For life goes by quickly,
Faster than you think.
Things you like to do,
Do it now.
And any compassion you like to show
To any human being,
Show it now.
Don't defer it.
For before you are aware,
The Winter of life will be there.
