The Volcano Didn't Erupt
Prof Jodha Chandra Sanasam *
The volcano, feared active and eruptive,
did erupt at a distance
not as destructive as the people feared;
the lava flowed sluggish on to,
leaving aside the terrain in its proximity,
but surging in our land rather
trickling in all through the gorges and ravines
to reach villages and hamlets here
causing distress to our brethren many;
not a calamity or devastation though.
People anticipated
muttering under their breath,
'This fumarolic volcano, too, in our land
is going to erupt soon.'
The destitutes in the milieu
wanted to watch the spectacle;
they had no idea what havoc
the blazing lava would create,
the multi-pronged scorching sludge!
They had no fear, no trepidation.
Yes, here too, some erupted
but a few popping sounds in piecemeal only
on few hill-tops in the range
no lava rushed out
no volcano-mount visible;
or was it some patches of wild fire
or real volcanic eruption
nobody could say for certain.
Now they have become weary
the plain indigent folks
their eagerness gone
the void in their stomach taking over.
For every small sound exploding
the report of death of somebody
the loss of some life
it does not stir them anymore.
Nobody seeks to know what it was
tired of waiting for the spectacle stupendous;
they yawned, muttered simply,
'The sleeping volcano didn't erupt;
dormant it has become maybe,
or maybe extinct, it has become.
