The Thirst
Jodha Chandra Sanasam *
O thirst!
My endless thirst!
You keep distancing away out there
further and further away from me
beyond the horizon, beyond the expanse.
My longing for you, to be with you
or to keep you near me
that's another thirst
yes, my thirst eternal.
I know
you persist in me ever
I can never grasp you though,
and now you've become my obsession.
Today too, it comforts me yet
only when I'm parched with my thirst
the thirst for you ever.
O dear! My thirst blithe!
Just to think of it
my thirst becomes another thirst;
and you're my happiness eternal.
It's when my thirst for you visits me
that a vista beautiful spreads before me
and I pick up my pen to write.
Again it drives me crazy to think,
'Will it to come to an end some time,
will this endless thirst come to an end?'
If this thirst of mine comes to an end,
won't there be anything left
for me to have another thirst?'
To think of that again
it has become another thirst;
and added up with these worries new
I grow thirstier ever further;
for I don't want my thirst to go away.
I find peace and propitiation
when this thirst torments me.
Is it coming to an end
this thirst of thirst,
how will I spend my days to come
if this thirst of mine leaves me?
This thirst of mine for love,
this thirst of mine for endearment
this thirst of my possessiveness over you
this thirst for my thirst!
