The Sunset Blues
K. Radhakumar *
Spring mornings see
Tadpoles swimming around
A big country pond.
They spend the day sunbathing
And the night sleeping.
Life has no beginning
And no end;
It goes like a dream.
There is no question of one-upmanship
And they live together
In perfect harmony with
The other insects and creatures
Of the big, big country pond.
Days go by
And the tadpoles metamorphose into toads.
Winter sets in.
The pond is over populated –
Water hyacinth, fish, snakes, lilies.
There is competition for food
And for space.
It is no joke
Trying to save one's life
From the hungry snakes.
Many things come into question with age.
Are there ponds
Beyond the confines of this pond?
If there are not,
Is it not cruel
To keep one confined to this place?
Who has done it?
And why?
That I am is a reality
And it is a wonder
That it is beyond reason.
Living a life
Just for the sake of it,
It gives my life no sense of purpose.
