The Story of the Moon and Stars
Jodha Chandra Sanasam *
While I was having food
that night
I just happened to look out
through the window
I felt they called me out
the moon and the stars of that night.
Offhand I stopped eating,
washed my hands and mouth,
and walked out in the night.
The heavy rain every night
stopped that night
everything was fresh and clean
that night beautiful.
I do not remember what I talked
with the moon and stars ebullient.
Love flooded in my heart
I did not know
where its gush came from.
The enthusiasm I felt
of narrating my emotion that night
I just could not imagine,
I longed to empty it out to somebody,
but who could I relay it to
in this land of ours
where people are striving
to extract peace out of guns?
My eagerness of the night
dissipated in the cool air.
When I went back inside my house
I found an estranged 'I'
sitting near my cold food
surrounded by some strangers.
They discussed
something very serious;
the estranged 'I'
listened to them solemn.
The talks were about the freedom
our land possessed in the yore
and about martyrs having turned
into the moon and stars in the sky.
The estranged 'I' greeted me
with side glances surreptitious
as I stopped at the door
unable to barge in
lest my entry should disturb
their story
the story of the moon and stars.
