The Questions
Prof Jodha Chandra Sanasam *
Helios Mangang, the sun, asked me,
'O poet!
Let me lob down my rays
piercing through the thick rains,
and let me shine, like in broad daylight;
I won't let the dark clouds shade a screen
obstructing me ever again.
During the nextYaoshang season
I'll not make my visage copper red
I'll shine my brightness all along!
Well, things done that way,
will you be able
to make your world happy ever?
Will your human friends, money-power-mongers,
be satisfied and satiated ever!
Will your earthy life be flawless?
No paucity of any kind in your land!'
Aega, the moon goddess, too told me one night
with smiles blithe,
'O poet, lover of moonlight songs!
It's not the chukar Nongyin alone;
I do have love-friends many,
the water lily too; the night jasmine too;
the Singgarei flowers of 'the tree of sorrow' too;
you too, and many more.
Let me shine with my moonlight every night
no more of crescent moon but only full moon;
let me see to it that moonlight and only moonlight
pervade ever around your space,
shine as a full disc ever,
to bring the air around you congenial
for you to muse in apt remembrance of your old flame.
Well, things done that way,
will you be able to bring blissfulness
in the milieu of your land
among your neighbourhood souls
who know not how to be happy!'
In the stillness of night
I attempted to brew up an answer befitting
to the questions of the sun, moon and stars.
But then I saw all the night stars
arrayed in gathering for a sit-in-protest,
Khongjom Nubee, the Taurus constellation weeping,
and the encircling stars twinkling their eyes
in jeering mockery to me;
and no answer ever came out from my mouth.
