The Poor Fountain
P. K. Deb *
The prayer of hunger and thirst
Reverberates in the air and at last
Melts down the heart of icy mountain
And the flow begins of a little fountain.
It flows down with the responsibility
Of carrying water for the ever thirsty
And hungry who fidget and weep in a desert
Hence it runs with a pain and strain in its heart.
It sings and makes the rocks to clap
To continue the journey without a nap.
Finally it reaches the destiny and looks for all
To meet the thirst and hunger of the people.
Alas! The fountain is surrounded by the pillagers...
The sun, winds, rocks, sands and others
Who suck it off to its last drop
Before the thirsty for whom it comes from the top.
