The Dead Mother
- Part 3 -
By Dr. Konsam Suken Singh *
1st January, 1.30 PM,.. Lunch time in office.(At present)
While having lunch from the tiffin which was brought packed from home in the morning as usual, Ton suddenly remembers his previous night's bad dream. To intensify the situation, a sudden fear sweeps over his mind and heart and one basic instinct inside him often tells him from deep inside his heart to go back home and check his old mother once to ensure that she is fine. So, hurriedly wrapping up with his lunch, Ton hires a paid taxi to come back home. It hardly takes 20 minutes for the taxi to drop Ton (on Ton's insistence to drive fast) to his door bell. Ton immediately presses the door bell and at the same time he calls over his mom too,
Ton - ".Mom...can u hear me ? "
As usual, his mother replies in a low weak voice from her bed in her bedroom, - " Yes son, coming.."
Hearing his mother's weak voice, Ton breathes a sigh of relief knowing that at least nothing untoward happens to her and that she is fine. After a lapse of about 2 minutes, the door is opened as usual and there Ton can see his mother. Ton suddenly hugs his mother and asks her,
Ton – " Are you alright mom ? "
Mom – " Yes son,..I am totally alright as you see me in front of your eyes !"
Ton whispers to himself, - " Thank God !"
Mom asks him astonishingly, - " But why do you look so worried and tense son today,...and what makes you to come back home untimely now,..what happens to you son,.tell me !"
Ton replies with a bit of relaxation in his voice, " Nothing mom,...I told you in the morning before I left for my work that yesterday I had a bad dream in which you fell down and collapsed in the bathroom while taking bath in my absence...and so..so...!! "
Mom – " Oh, that is why you come running from office !! Oh son, I told you that was JUST A DREAM,..A BAD DREAM ..that is all ! "
Ton – " I know mom,...but I don't know why and how..but SOMETHING inside me compelled me to come back and see you alright now! "
With this, Ton looks up to his mom and he saw a silent tear in her mother's eyes.
Ton – " Oh..common mom,..you are crying for this !!"
Mother – " No son, I am not crying,..it is just because my eyes are wet due to my old age,..that is why you use to put eye drops to my eyes often."
Ton (asking repeatedly again) – " Ok,..anyway you didn't have a fall or a slip in the bathroom while taking bath and all, are you sure ??? "
Mom – " No..no,..not at all,..I told you son, I am totally alright."
Ton (again whispers to himself) – " Thank God, again. I was so scared that....!! "

Time has passed by.....minutes...hours...days...weeks...months......!! And ultimately, by the grace of the Almighty, Ton's mother's prayer is heard and Ton's ''Dog's Day'' has come that Ton gets married to a beautiful and charming wife, the type of lady which Ton has always sought for as his life partner in his dream, which is arranged through some relatives. Now, with her son's marriage, Ton's mother's feels that her only 'till-then-left-out-wish' has been fulfilled and three of them lead a very happy life post Ton's wedding.
Authors' Note:
" We often come across and read about many 'science fictions' which blends science with human beings and thereby reproducing an imaginable possibility to the human lives. This short story is not a science fiction in its real sense but a sort of something in that line - a 'spiritual fiction', which connects the Spirits of our Souls and our human lives. It is just an imaginary theme from the thoughts of the writer, nothing more than that."
