Teaching the Teachers - Orientation Programme at NEHU, Shillong
One month duration General Orientation Programme for newly appointed teachers of higher education was organized by the UGC-Human Resource Development Centre, NEHU, Shillong, from the 23rd January to 19th February, 2017, with an aim to enhance the skills, knowledge and efficiency of the teachers.
Dr. Quendarisa Kharbuli, the course coordinator of the Orientation Programme informed that the major thrust during the Orientation Programme was laid upon basic modalities of teaching and learning process such as micro-teaching, philosophy of education, information technology, research methodology, curriculum development, question paper setting in accordance with CBCS, etc.
Addressing the College and University teachers at the Valedictory function of the Programme, Prof. T.K. Kharbamon, Director, English and Foreign Languages University and the Chief Guest of the programme, congratulated the participants at the successful completion of the one moth programme. She expressed the importance of such programmes in teaching and education, and desired that the teachers should disseminate the knowledge gathered over the last one month, at their respective work places.
While speaking on the occasion as chairperson, Prof. Rakesh Mohan, Director, UGC-HRDC, NEHU, informed that 41 participants, comprising of 18 numbers from Meghalaya; 8 numbers from Nagaland; 4 numbers from Arunachal Pradesh; 4 numbers from Sikkim; 4 numbers from Tripura and 3 numbers from Assam have successfully completed the training programme.
He deliberated upon the aims and objectives of Human Resource Development Centre & emphasized upon the need to focus on teacher’s education at the time of induction by providing orientation and followed by training periodically, through Refresher Courses. He emphasizes that earlier newly appointed teachers learn their art of teaching from their own teachers or from their role models.
However in the present day context where the task of teaching and educating has become more challenging, in which teachers have to play an important role in the development of the overall personality of the student, it is not possible to expect the teachers to acquire the art of teaching from their senior colleagues. In this context, it is necessary to provide systematic and well organized training programmes to the large number of newly appointed faculty members at the college and University level.
