Take smart choice before admissions
Ranjan K Baruah *
There is always healthy competition amongst students in leading academic institutions. There is no shadow of doubt that our future and career is also depend on the institute where we study. This edition, I am writing a different piece which is not a course or option but most important for us.
Most of the students are waiting for their results whether secondary or senior secondary. Students appearing for secondary shall continue in senior secondary by choosing arts, science or commerce stream. Most of the students who have appeared in senior secondary or Class XII exams are worried about their next educational level.
Many students crack entrance test and take admission in leading prestigious institutions managed by different governments. Many students will not be able to get admission in government institutes. Privately managed institutions shall try to advertise to get students.
Students clearing various entrance exams would get call or messages from different private institutes. They must be careful when they take admission.
Similarly students who have appeared or appearing in graduation final are also worried about their further education. As the government university’s seats are limited so students have to look for other universities for admissions.
Even students appearing for entrances like CAT or MAT are confused while selecting business schools. Though there are different parameters to choose one institute, I would like to mention some here –
Look at the proper affiliation of the institute; look at the campus placement and records of the previous placements; try to connect to alumni of the institutes.
This is not easy but can be done with the help of internet and other social media; search in the website properly about the institution. You can read about the review in different magazines or websites and take proper counselling from career counsellor.
A career counsellor is different and admission agent/representatives from a particular institute are different.
Some colleges might advertise that they are offering free education to students belonging to Scheduled Tribe or Scheduled Caste.
In this regard I would like to appeal to students and guardians to be vigilant. There are scholarships for the students of North Eastern region but that does not mean that everyone will get scholarships.
We must check the proper documentation of the colleges whether they have proper papers in connection with scholarships or not. Apart from students and guardian, I would appeal civil society to be alert and aware so that no institute can cheat any students from north eastern region.
If any student is visiting any educational fair then they must ask in details about the institute. Parents and guardians must be vigilant and cross examine about the institute.
Private colleges and institutes are trying to attract more and more students, so we must be careful as what they promise during admission time may not be true.
