"If music be the food of life, then play on." - William Shakespeare
The Little town of Churachandpur home to many communities, and the second largest town in the north eastern state of Manipur after the Capital- Imphal, has been many a times a mute witness to ethnic clash, civil wars and the power of the loaded Gun. Many bloody wars have been fought on the soil of Churachandpur. And the Town is now engulfed in FEAR as clouds of Suspicion looms over this scenic beautiful and once so peaceful town. If we were to go back into time to the 1970's and the 1980's or even further back to the "Swinging 60's"
Churachandpur was the most peaceful town in the State of Manipur. Only drunken brawls here and there were a serious cause for concern for the residents of this town. There was a spirit of love and brotherhood with every Community living together in a peaceful co-existence.
But times have changed now, and the town of Churachandpur has been many times an arena where blood thirsty 'Gladiators', sought and kill their next prey. Peace has been crucified now for the sake of false pride, so called racial superiority and inflated egos. As 'Patriotism' for one's own community takes control.
No wonder we now see Security forces in every nook and corner of the town. Youngsters strolling lazily on the streets of Ccpur against the backdrop of a star-lit night, singing songs of serenade with guitars in their hands have become a rare sight. With most people preferring to stay behind locked doors once the sunsets. Fears Lurks around in every corner. And the only certainty in this town is Uncertainty. No wonder after the birth of the Gun-Culture in this town, the Number of the Night Time Road Side Romeos has reached an all time low, while on the other hand the Number of 'Wanna-be Che Guevaras' is on the rise.
But in spite of all these fears and insecurities that has a vice like grip on the town of Churachandpur, and the State of Manipur as a whole. There is 'One Good Fellow' who still lives it up, who still strums his guitar and sings songs of yesteryears deep into the night.
He is none other than Timothy the Police Man!!
(A Police Man under Ccpur Police Station).
For most of the music lovers of Ccpur town, Manipur as a whole, and the 'Zo-Hnatlak Communities' spread over the North Eastern part of India - Timothy needs no special introduction. He has had his share of fame as the Guitarist and the Mainstay of the Legendary Rock Band of Manipur - The Joute Brothers Band, popularly known as 'The JB Band'. From Ccpur to Ukhrul, Imphal to Aizawl, Timothy has rocked them all. Apart from being a talented musician - He is also a very gifted and talented footballer, who could have given the Bhutias, and the Rennedys of Indian Football a run for their money, if only he had continued playing 'the beautiful game'.
After the break up of THE JB BAND Timothy joined the Manipur Police and he has been serving 'the force faithfully' since then. He is a fun loving, easy going guy with no airs about him.
For the Residents of Nehru Marg and Rengkai Road locality in Ccpur town, Timothy neatly clad in his Police Uniform is a common sight. And He in his good natural self always spreads smiles and laughers all around. He'd jokingly say ' I have a class to take' (in reference to his duty as a police man,) Due to the call and norms of his Police duty, he is required to carry a Gun (A Rifle or a Carbine) whenever Kids cast an admiring glance at the weapon on his hand. Timothy would advice and says to the kids ' Don't envy this weapon that I am holding in my hand, this is a 'Poor illiterate man's Pen, it is long, lengthy and very cumbersome to carry. The Normal Pen is much more power than this 'pen' of mine'. He would encourage the kids to study hard and become 'big officers'.
Being a true musician with lots of feel, the Musician in Him has not died away even though he has been in the Police force for a good many years now. Timothy would always carry his sole companion - The Guitar. And whenever time permits, he would strum the guitar effortlessly as if it was a part of his being and break into a song impromptu.
Request him to sing a song from the Golden Eras of the 80s and the 70s and he would do so with equal ease and proficiency making his guitar 'gently weep'.
Long before David Beckham (England Football Captain) knew what a 'Mohican Hair Cut ' was all about. Timothy had already sported the now famous Mohican cut way back in the 80's. He is quite a trendsetter in his own right. Beckham could pick up a few tips from him actually.
Timothy has 2 very close companions - 1. His pet Dog named Tinku, 2. His Acoustic Guitar. We usually see him, accompanied by one of these 2 companions. Sometime the 2 of them would accompany Timothy on his round of duty as a Cop.
Anyone can tell that Timothy prefers more the sounds of 'the Guitar' than the sound of the Gun. The way he holds and cradles his guitar is a real sight to behold. It is as if the Guitar is an extension of his very being, a part of his soul. Sometime we see Timothy riding on his Steel Horse (Cycle) with his pet-dog Tinku, clinging to his left shoulder and his guitar strapped against his back, silhouetted against the backdrop of the setting Sun.
Timothy, in his own is a 'Hero of our times'. He may have his flaws and drawbacks. We all have no one is perfect. But as long as he is around, we can be sure that he will continue to strum his guitar and sing, and spread smiles, happiness and laughers all around.
We can only hope that He lives a hundred years, and spread sunshine and happiness all around for the residents of Churachandpur town in these very hard and desperate times.
