Summer Thoughts
K. Radhakumar *
It is a dry season
And here I am
Waiting for rain
Like flowering plants in the afternoon
In a grey garden.
The sky is clear;
There is not a cloud in the sky.
On a country road in Afghanistan
A young doctor is dying an unwanted death.
The young man is hit by a bullet
As he goes to help the wounded.
It is no wonder
When the establishment and rebels clash
People get caught in the crossfire.
The young man sees
Blood oozing out of the wound
And fear flows over him.
The absurdity of the situation, of life
Slaps him hard across the face.
Most of my childhood friends are dead and gone.
So will I one day.
Here I am
An old man
Struck dumb
By an apparition
Of a wasted trip –
I have not seen the visage of life.
It is not in.
I am a late riser.
I married in my late thirties.
I have begun creative writing
Late in life.
It will start to cloud over,
The sun will move in cloud.
So I should hope
