Siltation blow to Singda dam longevity
Seven Sisters Post | David Mayum | Imphal (May 17):
Due to continuous deposition of sediments and other particles brought down by rains from the nearby hills, the bed of the Singda Dam reservoir has been filled up to a great height threatening the very existence of the dam.
Commissioned in 1995, the life span of Singda Dam was earlier estimated to be 100 years, but with the reservoir filled up with sediments, it is feared that the dam may go out of service after around 30 years. Public health engineering minister I Hemochandra Singh visited the dam site and saw the water level on Thursday.
Before visiting the dam site, the minister visited the sewerage project in Lamphelpat, Imphal. The minister said the sewerage project taken up in Imphal will be completed within 2013.
