Sermon force for free and fair polls in the hills
Times of India | K Sarojkumar Sharma, TNN | Jan 11, 2012, 10.39AM IST
With the state assembly election scheduled for January 28, the ECI is going all out to ensure the polls are free and fair and are conducted in a peaceful manner by employing the services of all available government machineries. Along the same lines, an apex Christian body of the strife-torn state, the All Manipur Christian Organization (AMCO), is conducting a series of awareness meetings in villages across the hills districts.
Since the church is one of the most powerful institutions in the Christian-dominated hill areas, AMCO conducted advocacy meetings before the programme was launched in which church leaders were asked to remain neutral during the polls. "We also asked them to work hard to ensure Christian voters do not indulge in poll malpractices like bribery, proxy voting and booth rigging," he said, adding the campaign is also against corruption.
AMCO, which also campaigns for peace and communal harmony in insurgency-hit Manipur, was instrumental in bringing about a solution to the ban the entry of Manipur vehicles in Nagaland by the Naga Students' Federation (NSF) after holding talks with its Nagaland counterpart - the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) - and various Naga civil bodies of the neighbouring state in May 2010.
