Season of Cicadas
Soibam Haripriya *
By the second branch of the mango tree
clinging somewhere near the violent burst of orange orchids
The spring cicadas
with its noisy cacophony
gave me and danao company
while we noiselessly water morok char
hastity transplanted from packets carefully sealed with banana leaves
After a while we'd share tea with a wedge of lemon floating in the pale redness
our hands rough with mud yet sipping in the aroma of wet earth wafting in from the ingkhon
One silent evening
The fragrance with a promise of rains
took me home to the day
when green grass baked into unwilling smokiness
and the blue smoke trailed for a distance
such moments fragile like wings of a dragonfly
took flight while the sun set behind grey hills
