Sangai Chef: Season 1, cooking competition at Hapta Kangjeibung on November 29 2018
Sangai Chef: Season 1 completed its final round on 29 November 2018, on the ninth day of the Manipur Sangai Festival 2018 in Hapta Kangjeibung. After a very tight competition between five
finalists, and a tie-breaker, Mr. Rock Awung Chihui who hails from (Yaingangpokpi) Ukhrul, bagged the winning prize.
The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Manipur, Shri N. Biren Singh handed over the winning prize of 1 lakh, certificate and a copy of the first ShiChef cookbook during the closing ceremony of the Manipur
Sangai Festival 2018 at BOAT. The winner will also be given technical assistance to start his own restaurant serving authentic Pan Manipur cuisine.
All contestants were also given a consolation prize of Rs 2000, a certificate and a copy of ShiChef cookbook during the ceremony.
Sangai Chef: Season 1 was organised by The Exotic School Of Cooking, with support from the Tourism Department, Government of Manipur, with a vision to put Manipuri Cuisine on the culinary
map of the world, by unearthing the exotic indigenous food of the Manipuris. It was a competition of a kind that promotes use of locally produced ingredients by discouraging contestants from using
imported food items.

The organisers firmly believe that continuing this practise will eventually help the farmers by adding value to their produce. Additionally, all original recipes from the contestants
will be compiled and published as the first cookbook of the competition.
A panel of expert judges from the industry were empanelled to judge the competition based on taste, presentation, authenticity, food knowledge and hygiene.
Chef Trimran Saka, specialist in oriental cuisine and Chef Surchandra Ningthoujam from The Classic Group of Hotels, were our main panellist for all rounds throughout the competition, in the presence of a different Guest Panellist for each round. Mrs. Sanyaola Kengoo Raman, Nutritonist; Mr. Rashingam Ngouroh, Foodie, Restaurateur; Mr. W. Ibohal, Director, Tourism Department; Chef Partho Pratim Bose, Executive
Pastry Chef, Four Seasons, Bangalore; Ms Alemjungla Jamir, Food Writer, Resturateur; Chef Priyojit Routh from Worsley Gateway Inn & Suites, Canada; Mr. Dearson Pamei, Food Critic; and
Chef Tony Karam were our Guest Panellist.
The final round, which was a “Signature Dish” round, encouraged contestants to present their best dish, in the presence of Chef Tony Karam as Guest Panellist.
