Rongmei recognized as official tribe in Nagaland
Morung Express | Al Ngullie | Morung Express news | July 24
Concerning the Rongmei community, the chief secretary said the government has decided to accord them recognition as a ‘Nagaland tribe.’ However, the government has emphasized that the designation is strictly only for the families and their descendents who settled in Nagaland prior to 1963, the years Nagaland attained statehood. However, the top official reminded that the designation of “tribe” is only for the Rongmei in Nagaland and not the Rongmei from other states such as Assam or Manipur etc or those who migrated from there.
That the pre-1963 Nagaland Rongmei is now a ‘tribe’ in Nagaland, the official said, they shall enjoy all benefits of citizenship under the State as do other tribes in Nagaland. However, they shall not have the benefit of Reservation, Lalthara said. Queried how the Nagaland government could identify whether or not one settled in Nagaland prior to 1963 or after that, or who could be whose descendants, Lalthara said a committee “verified and authenticated” them before being “certified,” by the Home department. The official did not offer elaboration.
