Rights groups protest against NE mega dams
Times of India | TNN | Apr 25, 2012, 05.40PM IST
The anti-mega dam movement in the region gained momentum on Tuesday when 20 democratic and civil rights groups under the banner 'Coordination of Democratic Rights Organisation' (CDRO) pressed Delhi and Dispur to stop the ongoing constructions of the mega dams in the entire region until a cumulative impact assessment study throughout the region's river basins is over.
Phulindro Konsam, an activist from the Coordination for Human Rights (COHR), Manipur said, "The respective state governments of the northeast region are busy signing MoUs on dams. The much-hyped dams which were earlier shown to be multipurpose ones are only concentrating on power generation. But power is not the only problem in the region. The government should have a transparent policy on this."
