" Save planet? Planet must be saying save yourself idiots; I will fine" says Paulco Coelho, author.
While the world is looking for innovative education, India is suddenly witnessing a plethora of new age careers- which were unheard of and undiscovered in the previous decades; but our state is remained fenced by narrow domestic wall and inferior complexities; and asking ourselves what our cast is, what our language is or religion is? This is the time to ask what our achievement is. It is our work that defines our self.
In words of Winston Churchill "The emperor of future will be the empires of mind" In saying so, W. Churchill recognized the importance of knowledge in determining destines of nation. History is just for past reference. Unless you are historian or research scholar, stop spreading history. A brief introduction of Naga people, Kukis, Mizo and Meitie in Wikipedia and Encyclopedia is good enough for a common people. World has talk about unique culture of tribal and famous tribal tattoos but not tribal history and civilization.
The reason why? Please ask to our historian. Today, tribal of Manipur are quite matured and the time has come for looking mera Spanongka Rani (my dream life partner). Change is continuity. We will not only be the people of free land; but a knowledge empowered people. If nations look only inwards and imagine they can solve their problems on their own, they will fail says expert. The world has become more integrated and interdependent. In both good and bad, in prosperity and peril, in opportunity and crisis we must recognize the new inter- dependencies. No land is an island unto itself.
Fond memories of childhood summer and spend more time with people you love most make you happy. Mr. Cliff Arnail, former lecturer of Cardiff University has attached numbers to the factors and created a happiness formula. Example:- O+ (N x S) + Csm / T+ He. When the value for being outdoors (O) is added to nature (N) multiplied by social interaction (S), added to childhood summer memories (Csm) divided by temperature (T), and added holiday excitement (He). Then, the third Friday in June comes out as the optimal day for peak happiness factors such as warm summer evening outdoors seeing friends more frequently, and excitement about holidays.
Our past nursery rhymes are begin with k+ satintupee (e-kara ) =ke; kh + Nongmeipaibee ( a-kara ) = kha; Yenbi chatlee yennao elee ( chicken follows where hen goes ). After some decades, children rhyme changes to 'Rain- rain go away come again another day….' No black board, no chalk; students' eyes run to the pointing stick of teacher! Honestly, we were fond of respect to our teachers, and sometimes, scary of physical punishment too.
On hand with books, slate and piece of chalk and on the other hand an empty jute bag to arrange self seat at school; reading and doing home work for the punitive teachers at the dim light of lantern and torch; in such a manner, time has passed for days, month and years. Our elders will tell tales of princes and old couple folk tale ( hanuba hanubi gee ware ) and occasionally, elders will tell tales of Bhut! (evil spirit) to pay an attention when we disobey to them.
Sometimes, we felt if our study is finished we will be free (complete or incomplete study). Some of colleagues dropped school and stopped studying fearing the punishment of teachers and peer pressure of study. By the way, we grew up with our favourite food stuffs available at 5 paisa, 10 paisa pocket money such as heingan, singju- bora- kanghao, mangal- chana, kabo etc. Also, we have had an experience of most exiting moments of being bachelors riding fashionable branded bi cycle " HUMVEER' or "HARCULUS " It is true, we have the mix feeling of joys and sorrow while remembering our pass sometimes and forever………
Modern nursery school begins with toys; play school, good stuff tiffin, and attractive uniforms, pick up and drop by school van and no physical punishment. However, one thing common is the peer pressure to finish study to make them free—holidays are most exciting time of children. Today, home schooling has become popular to free from four wall of school and pressures of teachers.
Recently, a home schooling child of 14 years old called 'sahil' silenced all his parents criticism by becoming the youngest ever Delhi topper of the tough IIT-JEE. Not just that, he bagged the 33rd rank in the country. 'If you decide to do home schooling then one parent has to be a home maker and all you need is right environment and interest in the subject' says Dr. Ruchi Kaushik, mother of IIT topper Sahil. She does not try and impose on her children as to what children want to study.
And if that ends up with the child performing a rare feat as school; well, no one's complaining, there is an alternative way of educating your kids. It is a lot of hard work, but very rewarding too. We feel that this is an appropriate way for a child to learn, without having to face pressure of any kind. Well, that is certainly worth thinking about, she added.
Today, a student is more interested in studying beyond the classroom and not just in physical sense. Teachers have to make sure that in order to keep the interest of a student alive in studies; they have to teach them the way students would want to learn. 'My teacher's class is boredom' often says by students. Why should I listen to you? (Please visit to www.brijj.com. for presentation skills and time management classes' strictly for professional use only).
Students want their lectures to be informative and analytical based on a dialogue between the students and teachers rather than old talk and chalk method. Role of teachers has been shifted to a "mentor"; a complete shift and all thanks to internet. It would not be an exaggeration to say that children are now a window to the world to their parents and they know much more than their teachers. The time for looking up children only for parents and teachers are over.
An informal manner of teaching is need for hour beyond the class room walls. They need to figure out a unique way of teaching that would hold their students attention, more and more interaction with students, inter school interaction programmes, inter collage interaction programmes, display in more convincing audio video programmes etc. They need to be innovating, learn and grow.
To teach something new to a generation that already knows a lot and already has access to information technology is a challenging situation, but it is not an impossible task. They want to be a part of change in the society. New generation is vocal about issues—things they feel strong about!
The challenges facing the education system continue to be access, equity and quality. Beside knowledge, student should also pick up transferable skills and it should be incorporated in the curriculum. There was a time when person would remain in one profession for a lifetime. Now, a US survey has shown that on an average a person changes at least 10 professions in his life time. Instead of preparing a career for life, we have to prepare a life of career, says BVR Chawdari, professor, National University Singapore (NUS).
Now, times are changing and issues for all economics and education is that one is no longer competing domestically. With the demand and expectations of globally competitive societies constantly changing, it is a moving target focus on skills- confidence- career and job opportunity. So, are we preparing for 21st century shifting paradigm?
