Rains and our woes
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: August 01 2015 -
Only a few days back people in the state were looking up at the sky while some farmers in neighbouring Assam conducted weddings of frogs in the hope of appeasing the rain god.
Farmers could not cultivate since the fields were parched.
But today people are beating their chests and cursing the heavy downpour.
Their vast paddy fields are in knee deep rain waters and all the paddy plants are destroyed.
Besides there is widespread damage of the houses and roads have gone under water.
Since nothing is done to drain away the stagnant water there is fear of spreading water borne diseases.
Swollen rivers elsewhere in the valley districts have wreaked havoc.
A number of bridges had been washed away and villages have been submerged. Mercifully so far there is no human casualty.
But many persons in general and children in particular will become susceptible to the water borne diseases and till date the government has not taken up any precautionary measures.
No medicine, drinking water and relief materials are provided to the affected people.
There will be more rains and more villages will be affected. It is high time the government swung into actions.
Drinking water, packed food items should have been distributed to the people who should be lodged in relief camps.
Medical camps with enough medicines should be opened in all flood affected areas.
A government which fails to come to the rescue of the people in such natural calamities is certainly not doing anything for the people.
The landslides which have started in some hill areas will obstruct the transportation of the essential items and this will cause shortage and trigger price hike.
