Rain puts on hold drought tag
Seven Sisters Post | Yumnam Rupachandra | Imphal (July 28):
Sudden downpour in the past 24 hours has somewhat dispelled the possibility of Manipur’s drought like situation getting any worse but the government is not taking any chances and has put into service the Loktak Lift Irrigation ( LLI) system since Friday midnight.
Irrigation and flood control minister Ngamthang Haokip, who toured the area Saturday, said, “Manipur continues to receive rainfall at 63 per cent of the normal rainfall.”
“At this rate we cannot declare the state as droughthit,” he echoed chief minister Okram Ibobi, who had earlier defended his government’s decision over the demand for declaration of “drought” in the state by various organisations.
