‘Racial discrimination’ to atrocities on SC/ST

While the students were making their voices heard, the court, listing the bail application of the two accused transferred the matter to a special court exclusively dealing with cases under the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Political and social observers have seriously noted the two developments in the light of massive protests over the existence of racism in India (either in overt of covert form) and the way how an incident that has been perceived as racial in nature has been viewed purely from the legal prism of atrocities on castes and tribes.
Even mainstream media seemed to be confused about what actually constitute racial discrimination in Indian. At least one news report said the accused has been booked on February 3 under under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for “passing racist remarks against” Taniam. But to put the matter straight, there is no racial law in India.
