Abstract: Understanding the response of amorphous solids to mechanical deformation is crucial in designing materials with desired mechanical properties. The approach to mechanical failure depends on the initial conditions and the type of deformation the solids are subjected to.
These factors make the definition of the yield transition ambiguous and therefore, in need of a better characterization. A way of getting rid of the transient effects and thereby obtaining steady states for a given strain is to subject samples to oscillatory shear deformation. We here perform extensive computer simulations of model glasses of various system sizes and show that, under oscillatory shear, they exhibit a sharp transition.
