Public Discussion Program on Mapithel Dam at Chadong Village
27 January 2015
Mapithel Dam Affected Villages Organization (MDAVO) organized a ONE DAY PUBLIC DISCUSSION PROGRAM on 27 January 2015 at Chadong Village, regarding the current situation in the villages which are affected by the construction of Mapithel Dam. Recently, the government have begun to block the coffer dam and water level is rising inundating farmlands and with fears of the future villages who are still to be resettled and rehabilitated.
This discussion was unprecedented as apex bodies of hills and valley will came together to discuss the plight of affected villages.
Representatives fromTangkhul Naga Long, All Tribal Students Union Manipur, Tangkhul Shanao Long, Naga Women Union, Committee on Human Rights, and All Manipur United Club Organization and Indigenous Perspectives etc took part in this day long discussion.
Based on the discussion, the following resolution was taken by the members:
1. Stop construction of any dam related activities immediately until amicable solution with the affected villages are inked, failure of which non-cooperation movement by the affected people supported by civil society organizations from hills and valley will be launched.
2. Release and open the blockade of Thoubal River immediately.
3. A dam conceived more than thirty years ago is outdated both in terms of the technology and requirements; and at the same time in this period there has been better understanding of dams and its impact along with related laws and policies, and therefore, this dam must be reviewed in its totality, along with the Expert Review Committee of Rehabilitation and Resettlement which the government has committed in the past.
Thanking you for covering this event.
Warm Wishes
