NEFIS PARTICIPATES IN PROTEST MEETING AT JANTAR MANTAR!
DEMANDS THAT ALL MEASURES WHICH HAVE FUELED THE CURRENT TENSION SHOULD BE WITHDRAWN!
APPEALS TO ALL COMMUNITIES THAT THEY SHOULD TAKE A STEP BACK AND PUT FORTH ALL THE CONTENTIOUS ISSUES FOR DELIBERATION AND LARGER CONSULTATION!
North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) today participated in a Protest Gathering at Delhi’s Jantar-Mantar calling for justice for all, peace, and communal harmony in Manipur. The present situation of conflict between communities is due to the role of the state government in causing animosity among different communities for narrow political motives.
The complete failure of the state institutions and the indifference of the state police to stop communal elements and violence have led to the death of many people, the destruction of homes, and the displacement of people. In communal conflicts, it is the poor and labouring masses who suffer, and political profits are reaped by the ruling elites having vested interests.
All measures which have fueled the current tension should be withdrawn, and all communities should take a step back and put forth all the contentious issues for deliberation and larger consultation. NEFIS demands the resignation of the Chief Minister of Manipur and handing over of power to an interim all-party government comprising representatives from all communities.
NEFIS also demands the establishment of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to ensure peace in the state so that people can safely return to their villages and rebuild their homes and lives.
Further, the provision of ex-gratia compensation to those who lost loved ones, suffered injuries, and loss of homes, grain, livestock, and so on should be ensured. An immediate relief package for the farmers, a one-time moratorium on loan and rent payments, and a general relief package for the affected areas should be ensured.
NEFIS also demands that the present Chief Minister and the members of those organizations who have indulged in violence should not be part of any peace process. Moreover, women should be given a prominent role in the peace process for it to remain meaningful.
