'Prepaid' remedy for power woes
Seven Sisters Post | Yumnam Rupachandra | Imphal (Apr 22):
The Manipur power department which is under tremendous pressure from the public over its utter failure in providing adequate power, sees a ray of hope with the introduction of the prepaid power supply system in place. The first phase implemented in Paona Bazaar, one of the major commerc ial hubs in the state capital of Imphal, has seen a sudden rise in the number of consumers. With prepaid power there has been a significant reduction in power consumption.
AK Bimol, professor at JNU, one of the three who filed PIL early last year in January is skeptical. On being asked to comment “Prepaid is not the answer,” he told Seven Sisters Post. There is complete institutional breakdown and despite two planning commission having been passed since this government came to power, the government has failed to come up with policy and program to plug the gap of demand and supply. “This move is cosmetic and small success in urban Paona Bazaar will not be the answer for whole of Manipur, he added.
