Poppy cultivation flourish in Manipur
Nagaland Post | Imphal, Fri, 22 :
After ganja, poppy cultivation continues to flourish in the remote corners of Manipur despite untiring efforts by government agencies and anti-drug organizations to contain narcotics smuggling.
It seems that, most people living in remote areas, particularly in hills have abandoned ganja and switched over to poppy as the latter gives more profit. Poppy growers in Manipur could fetch about Rs 30,000 from 400 square meters of land where it is cultivated, drug analysts.
Despite the mass scale destruction of the plants by government agencies in association with the NGOs campaigning against drug and alcohol abuse in the state, cultivation of the plant in remote hill areas of the state continues. Regional Director of Narcotics Control Bureau, Imphal in association with Custom Division, Imphal, Narcotic Affairs Bureau of Manipur police and NGOs like All Manipur Anti Drug Association (AMADA) with the assistance of the Assam Rifles deploying mostly in hill areas have been conducting destruction of the plants in various parts of the state for the last few years.
