Poll spirit lost in festive din of Zeliangrongs
Times of India | Naresh Mitra, TNN | Jan 11, 2012, 10.39AM IST IMPHAL:
With the assembly polls date drawing nearer, the state is abuzz with election activities. Even as all avenues and localities in Imphal and its adjoining areas gear up for the election, Kakhulong area in the city seems to be staying away from poll activities, at least for the time being.
Instead of election rallies and meetings, the residents of Kakhulong seem to be busy in activities like dance, music and feasts for the past four days. And this festive mood is expected to continue another couple of days.
It's Chakan Gaan Ngai or the festival of winter that is being celebrated here. It is a much-awaited annual event for the 30,000-odd Zeliangrongs, one of the many tribes of Manipur, living in 86 villages and colonies in Imphal Valley.
Kamson and many of his community members at Kukhalong, however, have grievances they want politicians to address. Apart from asking for better civic amenities, Kamson said as Kukhalong is in the heart of the city, the Zeliangrongs here are deprived of facilities that are given to tribals in rural areas.
"Except for post-matric scholarship and job quotas, the people at Kukhalong do not get benefit from any of the schemes meant for the improvement of livelihoods and income generation of tribals. We do not get these facilities as we live in an urban area," Kamson added.
