Pheiroijam Robin Luwang, a student pursuing Master of Technology at National Institute of Technology (NIT), Imphal has developed an unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) as a part of his practical project and submitted the same to the institute on June 20, 2023 .
Youngest among five siblings, Robin, s/o Ph Amu Meitei and Ph (ongbi) Nungshi Leima of Samurou Keithel, Imphal West is pursuing a two year course on technology at NIT, Lamphelpat. Speaking to The Sangai Express, Robin conveyed that the project he submitted to NIT was a quadcopter.
Saying that he has started collecting/procuring equipment to build another drone with four rotors (wings) which can stay airborne for a longer period and have vertical take off and landing capability, Robin continued that he procured most of the equipments and material from Delhi. The young lad opined that drones, if utilised for good cause, can solve many problems the State has been facing.
Associate Professor (Electronics) Dr Aheibam Dinamani said that there is no specific subject on drone-making at NIT, Lamphelpat but Robin has shown keen interest on the particular field by making drones and submitting the same for his project.
Four Brushless Direct Current Motors (BDCM), Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), Electronic Speed Controller (EPC), Radio Transmitter Receiver (RTR), propeller and battery are needed in assembling a drone which can stay airborne for about 30 minutes, Dr Dinamani added.
Saying that these equipment are not available in Manipur and have to be procured from other States, he continued that drones can be used to deliver some sort of services in survey of forest areas in difficult terrain, mob control, monitoring the warning signs of an impending landslide, mob and traffic control among others.
Saying that drones are widely used by the media and film-makers too, Dr Dinamani continued that drone technology is becoming essential in several fields and it can save time in collecting data from difficult terrain and hilly regions in forestry. He however said that due approval and license from the Ministry of Civil Aviation is needed to utilise drones.
