Subject: The Association of Meiteis in the Americas (AMA) Stands in Solidarity: Peace demonstration for ongoing violence in Manipur, India
Location: Lafayette Park, near the White House, Washington D.C.
The Association of Meiteis in the Americas (AMA) extends a warm invitation to a momentous peace demonstration at Lafayette Park near the White House on June 22, 2023, from 10 am to 5 pm (EST). We wholeheartedly encourage all concerned individuals, community leaders, and supporters to stand together as we collectively express our solidarity against the ongoing violence in Manipur, India – our beloved birthplace and motherland.
In the wake of the ongoing conflict that erupted on May 3rd, 2023, Manipur is facing an unprecedented crisis. Tragically, more than 125 lives have been lost, while over 350 individuals have been injured. The plight of over 50,000 displaced people seeking shelter in 350 relief camps is dire, with limited access to essential resources such as food, water, and healthcare.
The entire Manipuri population of 3.5 million lives in constant fear, anger, and anxiety about their future. The violence persists, exacerbating the suffering and trauma experienced by the people. We strongly condemn the killing of Indian Meitei villagers and the burning of their homes, Hindu temples and Meitei churches by Kuki militants and their affiliated organizations in the hill and near hill districts.
As members of the global Meitei diaspora, we cannot remain passive while our roots are tarnished by bloodshed. Everyone deserves the right to live free from violence and fear. We demand that the authorities uphold the people's fundamental human rights, including their right to dignity, education, and access to information. These fundamental rights have been unjustly deprived from the people of our community for far too long. We choose to act as the beacon of peace and solidarity amidst the chaos.
The peace demonstration at Lafayette Park is not just a mere gathering but a powerful symbol of unity, compassion, and hope. We aim to create a platform where the voices of the oppressed are amplified, and the world can witness the resilience and determination of the Meitei community in the face of adversity. This is an opportunity for us to call upon the international community, urging them to pay attention to the grave situation unfolding in Manipur.
We implore every concerned individual, regardless of background, to join hands with us and show their support for peace and justice. We extend our invitation to leaders, activists, community organizations, and anyone who believes in the power of unity and wishes to make a difference. Together, we can significantly impact and advocate for lasting changes and peace in Manipur.
We humbly request those unable to physically join the demonstration to stand united in supporting our cause by sharing this press release extensively on social media and through any available means. Let us ensure our message reaches the farthest corners of the world, resonating with the hearts and minds of those who can influence change.
AMA is committed to pursuing a peaceful resolution in Manipur that upholds every individual's rights and dignity. By organizing this peaceful demonstration, we strive to create a better future for our people, free from violence and conflict. Let us unite in our purpose and shine a light of hope upon our motherland.
