Peace and protest: 11 years on
Seven Sisters Post | Rupamudra Kataki | (Aug 28):
Irom Sharmila has been protesting against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (Afspa) for over a decade now. She has been nose fed, jailed, released and jailed again only to be released later. She has been cheered as a hero, criticised as being a fanatic. Yet, there are many who are ignorant about her. When a group of students asked people about the Iron Lady of Manipur, some stared in disbelief, others smiled and a few acknowledged her protest.
This group captured these moments — people’s awareness and ignorance about Irom Sharmila — in their photographs. Members of Yellow Cab, a creative group consisting of art students and activists, visited various places like malls, schools, colleges and carried out this project. There were varied reactions. “It was an enlightening experience. We encountered many interesting incidents. Many did not even know who Sharmila is. It is not that we visited malls and educational institutions only, but we also interviewed rickshaw pullers, shopkeepers, among others. Many of these people were not even aware of what was happening. Women were very shy to discuss this topic.
